Finally, there is a weapon to help you control a violent subject during an arrest.

Have access to a weapon without having to drop your hands to reach your belt when the subject starts to resist.

From desk of Ross Torquato:

Here is the common problem:

After 15 years as a patrol deputy and defensive tactics instructor, I have seen a common but serious problem.

You move in to arrest a "complaint" subject, only to have them start fighting as soon as you touch them.

Since they appeared to be compliant as you approached, you probably didn't have any of your weapons deployed. Now the fight is on.

Classroom options

If you have the ability, you may use a controlling technique to gain compliance. This is great if you have practiced enough.

Another option may be to reach for your chemical agent, baton or E.C.W.

A third option may be to disengage from the suspect and draw one of your weapons.

Street options

Unfortunately, most of us do not have the time to practice empty hand techniques to the point where we can use them against violent subjects. As a result, the techniques may not work properly and can result in you being injured or the subject escaping.

Grabbing a weapon from your belt may work, but to you expose one side of your head and face to the subject. It is at this point many of us are punched in the face.

The third option would work if we did it. I know from my time on the streets, and even longer teaching officers how to control violent subjects, this does not happen. Once we grab the subject, we do not going to disengage. We keep fighting.

A Better Option

Talon - Close Quarters Impact Weapon is designed to be worn near your collar by clipping it on to your shirt or vest or wearing it in your shirt pocket. By wearing the Talon near your collar:

I have worked with the Talon impact weapon and have found it very functional. I believe it is a tool that can greatly enhance Officer Safety. From the ground / CQB perspective it may not always be possible to effect release so I see a tool such as this being extremely functional to soften up potential targets and distract so that an Officer can get to a counter or a higher force option.

I wish you all the best with this and I endorse its application!

I got the chance to evaluate your Talon over the past two weeks while operational in both patrol and SWAT capacities.  The tools small size, built in clip and lanyard make it easy to carry on any assignment.  Keeping the tool in my hand while engaged in handgun deployment required some hand management.  I found it easier to utilize the lanyard as I have relatively small hands for my weapon.

The tools covertness against adversaries is where it really shines.  It was used twice with excellent results and on both occasions the subjects had no knowledge of what was used against them.

Overall I’d recommend the talon as an option for covert impact weapons deployment.  It requires some thought on usage and deployment but nothing that can’t be easily remedied with basic training.

"How does the Talon fit into my use of force matrix"? This is the most common question I am asked.

The Talon fits into various levels of the use of force matrix. The Talon can be used to press into a muscle at pressure point levels, and can be used with quick short strikes into muscles at the same level as you would use a baton or taser.
